“Therapy is a journey of self-discovery, where you become the author of your own story."
- Sonia Shah
As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT #139868) I work with both adolescents and adults as they navigate the complexities of anxiety, OCD, disordered eating, body image difficulties, life transitions, and relationship challenges. My goal is to empower you in your unique life story. Together, we can integrate tools to effectively manage anxiety, explore the depths of your emotions, and uncover patterns within your personal life and interpersonal relationships.
My academic background includes a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. While I draw inspiration from Depth Psychology, my approach is tailored to you, incorporating personalized techniques. I integrate elements of Gestalt theory, expressive arts, and evidence-based interventions like Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERP).
Prior to establishing my private practice, I worked extensively with individuals facing severe mental health challenges, substance use issues, and eating disorders. This experience has provided me with a deep understanding of the complexities of human experiences, and I am dedicated to providing compassionate support on your path to healing and growth.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Therapy is a collaborative process where you and a trained therapist work together to address emotional, psychological, and relational challenges. Therapy provides a safe space to explore thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, leading to personal growth, improved coping skills, and better relationships.
-
Therapy can benefit anyone dealing with life stressors, mental health issues, relationship difficulties, or personal growth goals. If you're struggling to manage your emotions, feel stuck, or want to improve your overall well-being, therapy can be helpful.
-
In each 50-minute therapy session, you can expect to engage in a collaborative dialogue in a confidential and nonjudgemental environment. The initial sessions, typically focused on building a strong foundation, will center around getting to know each other, delving into your background and history, and understanding any areas you’re currently experiencing struggles. These early conversations are vital for me to gain a comprehensive understanding of your experiences, challenges, and goals.
It's important to note that while change and progress are central to the therapeutic journey, they don't usually happen immediately. Just as it takes time to nurture any meaningful relationship, the process of self-discovery, growth, and healing in therapy evolves gradually over time. As we work together, we'll explore your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, uncovering insights that can lead to meaningful transformation. Your patience and commitment are key ingredients in this process, and I am here to provide guidance and support every step of the way.
-
The duration of therapy varies based on individual needs and goals. The timeline for progress varies for each person. As we continue to collaborate, we'll tailor the treatment plan to address your specific objectives and work towards achieving lasting transformation.
-
Therapy session frequency depends on your needs and the therapeutic approach. Initially, sessions are often scheduled weekly or bi-weekly, and as progress is made, they may become less frequent. We’ll work together to determine the frequency that is the best fit for you.
-
Selecting the right therapist is a crucial step in your journey toward personal growth and well-being. The therapeutic relationship is a collaborative one, built on trust and mutual respect.
To determine if we're a good fit, I offer a free initial 10-15 minute phone consultation where we can discuss your concerns and get a sense of how we might work together. Trust your instincts – if you feel comfortable and understood during our conversation, it's a positive sign that we could make a great team in your therapeutic journey. If not, I may be able to offer referrals or point you in the direction of a potentially better fit. Your well-being is a priority, and finding the right therapist for you can greatly enhance your therapeutic journey.

Depth Psychology explores the unconscious mind and the underlying factors that influence thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. By delving into the depths of your psyche, we aim to uncover hidden patterns, unresolved conflicts, and gain insight into your authentic self. Depth Psychology emphasizes the exploration of unconscious processes, dreams, and symbolic meanings. It seeks to bring awareness to the deeper layers of the mind that may be impacting your well-being and relationships.

In addition to providing a supportive and empathetic space for our therapeutic work, I also integrate specific approaches that cater to your unique needs. This may include approaches like Gestalt therapy, which emphasizes self-awareness and personal responsibility. It helps you become more present by integrating different aspects of yourself and addressing unresolved feelings and experiences. We may utilize experiential techniques, such as role-playing, guided imagery, and creative expression to gain insights through direct experience.
I also utilize ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) Therapy for individuals experiencing different types of anxiety disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). ERP Therapy can be a highly effective treatment that involves gradually exposing you to anxiety-provoking situations while refraining from engaging in compulsive behaviors. ERP Therapy works by desensitizing your anxiety response and breaking the cycle of fear and avoidance. Through controlled exposure, you learn to tolerate discomfort and realize that anxiety decreases naturally over time. Facing your fears can be challenging, but ERP Therapy is conducted at a pace you're comfortable with. Your therapist will provide guidance and support throughout the process, ensuring your well-being is a top priority.
